The Mentone Racecourse Reserve is named from, and sits on the spot of the former horse racing course which operated from 1888 to 1948.
Mentone Racecourse was one of the pre-eminent local tracks in Melbourne, and continued as a training course from 1948 until 1972 when the area was sold as a housing estate.
The reserve honours its past with the playground decorated with images of racehorses, horse statues and ride on springers, as well as a wooden maze, flying fox, slides, swings and a sandpit.
A soothing ornamental lake with water fountains, home to numerous ducks and water birds, is the centrepiece of the park which can be enjoyed by walking trails and bridges taking you around the landscaped open spaces.
For the more active, there is half court basketball, AFL and soccer posts, and a tennis rebound wall.
There are a number of sheltered areas with barbecues and picnic tables for get-togethers and kids parties, public toilets, drinking fountains, and ample car parking is available.
