Suburban Rail Loop

The Suburban Rail Loop, a Victorian Government project, is building an underground rail loop including:

• Cheltenham SRL station located at Sir William Fry Reserve (Highett) next to Southland
• Train stabling yards on Kingston Road in Heatherton
• Clayton Station (just outside of Kingston but with its precinct area spanning into Kingston).

Latest project info

May 2025:  Kingston Council has raised concerns about the Victorian Government’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) draft precinct plans, warning that the current plans fail to identify how critical infrastructure needed to support liveable, sustainable neighbourhoods will be delivered.

While Council supports new public transport and housing, the plans released by the Suburban Rail Loop Authority do not commit to essential services and infrastructure to match the scale of growth being proposed.

March 2025: The Victorian Government has released draft plans for the Suburban Rail Loop precincts, outlining the type of housing and development that will surround the new stations. The plans provide direction on housing growth, employment priorities, community infrastructure and open space and transport connectivity.

Community feedback must be lodged by 11.59pm on Tuesday 22 April 2025 via Engage Victoria website.
