Water strategy receives major accolade

Kingston’s water planning and management has received statewide recognition.
Our Integrated Water Strategy has been named as the winner in the ‘Strategic or Master Planning’ category at the Stormwater Victoria Awards for Excellence.
This major industry accolade particularly highlights our sector leadership in responding to the immense pressures that changes to our climate and increased urbanisation place on every part of the water cycle.
We have a proud history of being pioneers in integrated water management and played an important role in stormwater quality and other related initiatives since before the turn of the century.
A holistic, integrated approach to managing our water delivers multiple benefits. It supports the liveability of our city by cooling our environment, keeping our award-winning sports grounds in top condition, reducing pollution from entering the bay and waterways, and supporting our biodiversity.
The strategy outlines the vision and steps needed to become a water sensitive city by 2040, what council will do, and what actions our community can take.
It includes our goals that are focussed on:
- Using water wisely, including less drinking water (potable water) and more use of alternative water such as rainwater tanks, stormwater, and recycled water.
- Protecting our waterways and bay by reducing litter and all forms of pollution.
- Improving our flood management.
- Enhancing education and partnerships with our community.
Implementation of the strategy has been on track for the last two years, with many exciting projects being undertaken in partnership with our community and key stakeholders. It has also guided engagement with state government ‘big build’ projects, such as the level crossing removals.
