A sustainable house - Mordi passive house

Sustainable House Day hosted by Renew, is an annual, national event offering the opportunity to explore some of Australia’s most inspiring green homes, and learn from the people who designed them, built them and live in them.

On Sunday, May 4, 2025, over 150 sustainable homes across Australia will open their doors for in-person tours.

You can explore all homes and buy tickets online via Sustainable House Day.

Tickets are limited for each home, so book now to secure your spot! A small fee applies to help cover event costs.

Sustainable homes in Kingston

This year, there are two sustainable homes in Kingston with open house tours:

Mordy Passive House, Mordialloc

After losing their home to a fire, the homeowners re-designed their house during lockdowns to Passive House standards for comfort, efficiency, and sustainability, using SIPS for insulation and airtightness. The home is all-electric, featuring a heat recovery ventilation system, solar power, energy-efficient appliances, and EV charging. Designed for accessibility, it includes wider doorways and adaptable spaces. Their evolving garden supports local wildlife and food production, with a 10,000L rainwater tank for irrigation. After two years, the homeowners of the Mordy Passive house wouldn’t live any other way and are excited to share our journey.

Mentone Back to Front House, Mentone

Guided by “Renovate, don’t detonate,” this project transformed a 115 sqm brick veneer house into a sustainable 205 sqm home designed for long-term comfort. Now featuring 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, it maintains the same energy consumption as the original house through full insulation, double glazing, and an efficient heat pump system for ducted heating and cooling - eliminating gas use. Designed for flexibility, it includes two connected apartments for intergenerational living. A bold double-story front extension enhances street appeal while maximising space. With sustainability and adaptability at its core, this modern home is built to last.
