The Belair Lip Bombs

Saturday: Pier Stage 7.45pm - 8.30pm

Comprising four friends (Maisie, Mike, Jimmy and Dev) from the coastal town of Frankston, Victoria, The Belair Lip Bombs craft heartfelt and hook-laden indie rock songs connected by the group's close bond and friendship.

Led by Maisie Everett (vocals, guitar), the group formed in 2017 and built an early following across Melbourne supporting local acts Ladyhawke, Spacey Jane, Slowly Slowly, Tired Lion, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, British India and more.

In 2018, the group released their debut, self-titled EP,  a collection of six tracks characterised by loud rock influences and 90’s grunge guitar sounds. In 2019, the group expanded their sound further on ‘Songs to Do Your Laundry To’, an EP that explored indie rock and pop sonics across its tight three-track run.

Refining their sound throughout 2020, The Belair Lip Bombs followed the success of early standout tracks ‘Blah Blah Blah’ and ‘Golden Skin’ with the 2021 single ‘Out of Here’ — an earnest and love-sick rock track that has cemented the groups knack for writing catchy, slick and honest pop songs.

Although cutting their teeth through a sonically varied and exciting beginning, the group made their most defining statement on 2023’s ‘Lush Life’, a record spanning 10 tracks of evocative exploration with stories that run a gamut of longing, seeking new horizons and discovering new paths to satisfaction and self-fulfillment.

If debut albums are meant to serve as the gateway, a first impression, then The Belair Lip Bombs’ introductory effort paints a vibrant and emotive portrait of a band truly finding their sound.

'The album is titled "Lush Life"—these words are referenced a few times throughout the album. Themes or motifs explored in the album often involve a longing for something that isn’t there, but maybe not quite knowing exactly what that something is. The term "Lush Life" sort of describes a picture-perfect world where everything is easy (but doesn’t actually exist),' says Maisie.

Initially released on Cousin Will Records in Australia, ‘Lush Life’ was recently reissued through Jack White’s Third Man Records, culminating as both the first Australian release on the international label and the beginning of an exciting record deal between the band and label. Since the release of ‘Lush Life’, the group have performed globally at Austin’s SXSW festival and The Great Escape in the UK.

Locally, 2024 has seen The Belair Lip Bombs perform at Laneway Festival and Golden Plains, alongside national tours supporting Hockey Dad, Militarie Gun, Blondshell and more. The group have also embarked on a longlist of headline tours in Australia, New Zealand and the UK/EU—including sold out shows in London, Melbourne, Brisbane and more.

The Belair Lip Bombs are currently in the writing phase of their sophomore album, which is set for release on Third Man Records worldwide in 2025.

Killing Heidi

Sunday: Pier Stage 6pm - 7pm

Killing Heidi are officially forever. Twenty years ago, when the disarming folk-pop of Kettle launched Ella and Jesse Hooper into high radio rotation, it was something neither expected. But tour after tour, the Violet Town siblings are finding their explosive power pop more entrenched in the Oz rock pantheon.

There's a whole generation that doesn't need reminding that the early '00s belonged to Killing Heidi. Weir hit #2 and Mascara #14 in Triple J’s Hottest 100. Debut album Reflector won four major ARIA awards and sold 4 times platinum as Ella and Jesse took out the prestigious APRA Songwriters of the Year award in 2001.

After a fruitful decade of diverse solo and duo pursuits, the pair reignited the flame for the 20th anniversary of Queenscliff Music Festival in 2016: a perfect reflection of their first teenaged performances under the Killing Heidi banner.

Blown away by the warm welcome and electric energy of a capacity crowd, they went on to meet snowballing demand at the Zoo Twilights concert series at Taronga and Melbourne Zoos.

In 2018, they kicked it up another gear with a SOLD-OUT capital cities tour backed by Live Nation and followed by an extensive regional run of shows. A year later, they hooked up for a co-headlining national tour with '90s rock icons, Baby Animals.

In Summer 2020, Killing Heidi performed across every state and territory of Australia as part of the epic Red Hot Summer Tour, with fellow Australian rock giants Hunters & Collectors, James Reyne, The Living End, The Angels, Baby Animals and Boom Crash Opera.

Bill Barber and The Holding Cell

Beach Stage: Sunday 2 March at 1:45pm

Hailing from the Victorian goldfields, Bill Barber and The Holding Cell are paving the way for a new blend of blues, southern rock and Americana in Australia.

Forming in June 2023, Bill Barber, Tommy "back beat" Brown, Jaspar Austin Gray and Shaun Klinger were in a place musically and personally where they wanted to do something different. From the very first rehearsal that's exactly what they had, different.

Aggressive, exciting and incredibly emotive and with the hard-driving rhythm section of Gray and brown, heavily technical and soulful arrangements of Klinger and the Raw, powerful vocals and brutally honest lyrics of Bill Barber, the Holding Cell have created a unique blend of southern sounds that so far, has had them leave nothing on the table and no stone unturned.

A nothing short of amazing first year as a band with a constant foot on the gas. Already taking out 2023 MBAS blues performers of the year, placing in the semi finals at the international blues challenge in Memphis USA

playing sold out ticketed shows and being invited to play some of the biggest Blues festivals in the country, including Blues on Broadbeach, Echuca Moama Winter Blues and many many more.

With their First single and first LP "The Muscle Shoals Sessions" due to be released in July 2024. The "Cell" have yet another huge year ahead of them. Recorded live over 10 hours in the legendary FAME studios in Alabama, who have made some of the greatest records recorded some of the most influential musicians in history including Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, The Allman Brothers band, Jason Isbell, Drive By Truckers, Steven Tyler and countless others.

At its essence the Holding Cell is the shared experience and brotherhood of four like minded musicians that love nothing more than sharing that with as many as they can.

Cass Eager

Pier Stage: Sunday 2 March at 2pm

"If Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones had a love child, it would be Cass Eager.” - Mark Winkler, platinum award-winning lyricist.

Cass is an R&B soul singer with a sound that embodies old-school cool with bold sexy optimism. Her sound takes its cue from a vintage sonic swagger a-la Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones, and when you press play you’ll want to be sipping cocktails at your favourite lounge bar in LA with best friends and lovers alike.

Cass’s songs remind you that if the champagne glass isn’t already full, then it’s at least half-full (and definitely never empty). Her signature chocolate-coated vocals are drenched in a feel-good vibe and her megawatt smile and natural charisma draw you in with gravitational force. Her songs shine a light on the woman you've been, the one you are becoming, and the one you’re meant to be.

Cass’ single “The Way I Feel About You” and its crowd-sourced video during lockdown captured the imagination of her fans and industry. Her song “Ain’t No Stopping Me” hit over 1.6M streams on a recent US Hyundai commercial, and her music has also been featured on a US McDonalds commercial, as well as multiple TV shows on Amazon Prime, Nine Network and E! channels. Her last two singles “Back To Gold” and “If You Were My King” showed love in its glorious opposites; one sensual and visceral, and the other dividing up the kingdom in the power of an equal alliance.

Cass’ upcoming album ‘Modern History’ is music made for both lovers and fighters. It illuminates love in its multitude of forms - self-love, romantic love, and love for life itself. Throughout the album there is a sense of empowerment that comes from self-awareness - a testament to the strength of a woman. Several songs were written in collaboration with lyricist Stephanie Morton-Small and producer Bill Lefler, and will be released in 2023.

A few years ago, Cass headed to LA and carved out a whole new sound; a love of classic soul, Motown and R&B mixed with a blend of the new West Coast. If you’ve heard Eager’s earlier albums and loved them, don’t worry. At its core, her new sound still carries the blues, but this time around influenced by LA-based producer Billy Lefler (Ingrid Michaelson, Avril Lavigne). Her dreamy old-soul voice swaying across smooth swaggered lo-fi sonic terrain; fierce and irreverent lyrics bringing out the self-love and lover in us all, all while steeped in the power of a woman.

“I write songs to try to - in the words of the great Dolly Parton - 'make them laugh, make them cry, scare the hell out of them,'” Cass says.

She’s performed for Prince Harry and done several tours of duty entertaining the international troops from Egypt to East Timor, the Middle East to the Solomon Islands. She’s won crowds over at festivals around Australia and several tours across North America with the likes of Bob Egan (Wilco, Blue Rodeo) and Ash Grunwald, dropping her joy bomb wherever she lands.

She’s performed with artists such as Michael Franti and Spearhead, and her EP ‘Down On My Knees’ was voted Top 10 Album of the year in Rhythms Magazine.

Cass finds joy in hammocks, road trips, coffee, whiskey, sunsets, the moon, the ocean, anything vintage, rebels, muses, young-at-hearts, palm trees, velvet, denim, soul, R&B, rock’n’roll and eternal adventure.

Soul legend Al Green told Cass - in his church one Sunday in Memphis - "good things are gonna happen to you girl," and she won’t ever stop believing.

Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice

Beach Stage: Saturday 1 March at 7:15pm

Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice make modern punk music in the primordial sense of the word - no rules. Combining elements of post-punk, new wave, full power rock n roll, avant-garde and surrealism. Their ethos is creative resistance - innovative and politically subversive - using music, performance, visual art and film to project a message that’s equal parts critical and hopeful.

“One of the most important bands in Melbourne... Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice serve us legitimate questions about coping with living in a time when everything seems to be falling apart around us” - ROLLING STONE AUSTRALIA

Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice is most often compared to luminaries Devo & Talking Heads or contemporaries Total Control & Tropical Fuck Storm* (*who they’ve supported on multiple occasions). Led by Dougal Shaw, Dr Sure was a nickname (Dougal’s initials, D.R. Shaw) that became a multi-disciplinary alter ego - encompassing songwriting, film-making, design, tattooing, activism et al - which is distilled into his Unusual Practice.

The music is amplified by Miranda Holt (Drums), Jake Suriano (Bass), Tali Harding-Hone (Guitar) and Mathias Dowle (Guitar, Synth). The DSUP live show is formidable. The 5-piece coalesce through identical stage wear and aesthetic visuals, Dr Sure’s lead vocal often reinforced by the gang vocals of the remaining members. 3 players merge for a pacemaker- precise rhythm section - a consistent drum, bass and guitar foundation - while the other 2 roam between synthesizers, sample pads, vocoders and 2 extra guitars, adapting to different temperaments.

“There’s a brilliant versatility to be found in the music of Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice, a project that has adapted between releases. Led by Dougal Shaw aka Dr Sure, the full band offers enormous post-punk with big grooves and political themes, but every now and then Shaw lets us in on music that feels more personal, constructed solo to capture moods and experiences between records. Dr Sure’s thrives in both formations, adapting the post-punk of the past with an undeniably fresh perspective.” - POST-TRASH (USA)
