Rubaba Haider - Refugee Week
Friday, 15 June 2012
Opening drinks: Friday 15 June
Artist Rubaba Haider’s remarkable life journey inspires her art. As a young child, Rubaba Haider remembers drawing clouds and trees from traditional miniature paintings found in old books in her hometown of Firakhloum, Wardak Province in Afghanistan. During the Gulf War in 1991, Rubaba and her mother fled from the terror and turmoil of war and migrated to Lahore, Pakistan in search of a better life. It was here that Rubaba studied an Arts degree at the National College of the Arts, supported financially by her brother Ali, who had found freedom in Australia in 1991.
Rubaba and her mother emigrated to Australia in 2009 under sponsorship, where the artist surmounted a completely new set of cultural assimilation challenges including a language barrier and went on win the 2010 Heartlands Art Prize. Rubaba's work evokes the emotional and physical traces of wounds as metaphors for life experiences which leave us changed forever.
